Joey’s Answer

Hello Aspen!

I am currently finishing my Master’s Degree at Juilliard in bassoon performance .

The first thing to do when even thinking about applying to Juilliard is deciding your major. There’s no undeclared or undecided track when you enter as a freshman. Your main instrument/voice is your major. Also, keep in mind that Juilliard’s main musical genres are classical and jazz. There’s no degree for commercial/contemporary music.

From there, it’s a process of practice and rehearsal. Almost all music majors at Juilliard in particular require what we call a pre-screening video audition. For you to even be invited to a live audition at the school, you have to pass this video round. The key is really hard work. You’re not allowed to make audio edits to the music, so everything in that video has to be rehearsed. The requirements for both the pre-screening and Live audition are on the Juilliard admissions website.

In terms of scholarship, the audition is key. You will audition in front of the faculty of whatever major you choose. If you impress them in person, they will nominate you to receive some form of scholarship.

Joey recommends the following next steps:

Choose what major you’ll apply with when the time comes (aka choose your instrument/voice)
Choose the repertoire you will apply with
Practice before you make the pre-screening tapes.

Akash’s Answer

Hi Aspen,

Its great to hear about your passion for music and the goal you have set for yourself. I truly believe having a clear goal in mind is an important step to shape your future. I too wanted to pursue music early in college and received an invitation to the musicians institute in LA. Due to certain circumstances I could not accept and changed my profession to engineering. When I saw your post I thought about how I felt when I was trying to get into the musicians institute. Based on my experience I would recommend the following.

> Follow any blogs/newsletters that juilard has. This will give you information about upcoming admissions events

> The juilard website also has an admissions page where you can register your interest

https://www.juilliard.edu/admissions/connect-us/introduce-yourself-juilliard-admissions

> The school also has admissions counselors which you can speak to by simply registering on the website

> Spend some time on recording a good audition tape (at a recording studio preferably) so you have this ready when time comes to apply

Once you know which school you want to go to. The best approach is to be connected to events/webinars that the school runs in order to show your interest. When you then submit your application, the school clearly sees your interest and passion from your past engagement with them. I hope this information helps you and I wish you all the best for your future.

Best Regards,

Akash
