Robert’s Answer

Absolutely. Computers allow design work to be done while visualizing the site plan. Roads and utilities can be designed overlayed on the site plan. In the past 20 years we have gone from draftsmen to CADD operators to young engineers doing their own drawings on the computer. It gives you an opportunity to explore more options while designing. In hiring young engineers, I would always chose the one with Auto Cad experience.

Sally’s Answer

Put it this way, your friends are not wrong. It would help.
It could mean the difference of your CV being better than another graduate applying for a job and so you get an interview or you get the job, because you have CAD experience. CAD does help enormously in the civil engineering industry. It also shows any employer that you may be willing to train on other courses that are work/industry related.

Michael’s Answer

Knowing how to use AutoCad is certainly a must for any new civil engineer. The early part of you career will require you to prepare plans and calculations for various projects. You do not have to be an expert, the skills with come with the job by using ACAD on a regular basis, learning tips and tricks from others in the office. Dont worry, that will come with practice as you get paid to use it.

Mohammed Tauseeq’s Answer

Yes, it is really helpful for civil engineers we have to know how to use it BUT if you want to be a Structural Engineer you have to learn STAAD Pro / ETABS too because the jobs like AutoCAD Draftsmen can be done Civil Engineering Diploma Students and there are many mechanical engineers using AutoCAD and Revit to be 3D modellings but STAAD Pro/ETABS need to be used by graduates with concepts of Civil Engineering
