Mike’s Answer

Hi Isaiah!

Presume the question is about how I selected a college and selected a major. My path, and my advice would be:

- talk to your school Counselor about your interests & what you like to do
- decide if you want to go to school close to home
- talk to your parents and friends to see if they know someone, or a company, where you can talk to them about the job/career that interests you
- use the same lead above to see if they have some type of part-time, or summer-jobs, where you can get some practical insight into the job/career which interests you
- research online the "pros/cons" of your career and school choice

For me, I envisioned playing baseball for a university and studying to be an orthodontist. Although I did neither in the end, I worked with my school counselor and parents to help identify the schools which had great baseball programs, and great pre-dental course offerings. Ultimately, I choose Electrical Engineering, and was fortunate that the school I selected had a great engineering program, along with pre-dentistry.

You can also talk to your teachers about schools they attended, and the degrees which they pursued. You will get some great insight if your teachers started in their profession as a teacher, switched careers later, and if (and why) they enjoy the work they do. The most important part is to keep and open mind, and remember its okay to change your mind about a career/school if you find out its not the right choice for you.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

alan’s Answer

University learning is not the same as job training. You need to learn to think broadly and keep your options open. You have a good start but leave yourself open to change.

alan recommends the following next steps:

Visit your local police and talk with them about their career.
