Steven’s Answer

What would you like to do in the automotive field? Advice could be very different for different positions.

Generally speaking, you could align with a university that has alumni in the company(s) you are looking to get into. Also, look for professional associations with company leadership that have roles or representatives in the association. Build you network with people in the field and express interest. These are the places to learn and ask questions. Through the course of participation you will build a network and find an avenue. People like to recruit from places they have been involved with.

All in all, these jobs are often not as difficult to come across as many think. Turnover in the auto industry can be very high and professional positions open up regularly. Keep your eyes open for opportunities you like and apply for them.

James’s Answer

As in all businesses, the key is "people." Who do you know, and who do THEY know. Attend car events, like Cars and Coffee mornings and other enthusiast show and ask questions. Show your knowledge, interest and spirit. And follow up if you are offered any contact details.
