Robert E.’s Answer

The best way to assess whether or not you would want to become a physical therapist is to reach out and ask if you can shadow several in your area.

Physical therapy is a unique field that spans everything from acute-care hospital settings as well as sports and orthopedic stand alone clinics. PTs also can specialize in pediatrics, geriatrics, cardiopulmonary, and neuro rehabilitation. Ultimately seeing how some of these fields operate can help you decide if this is a good match for you.

Best way to see job prospects in physical therapy is to simply check out the Bureau of Labor Statistics for job growth. Currently they project a 22% growth into the year 2022.

Robert E. recommends the following next steps:

Shadow a PT in at least 3 different sub-settings.
Look up school requirements and assess current progress.

Case’s Answer

I agree that shadowing is a great first step. Shadowing hours look good on college applications and will help you better understand the profession. Texas has a very robust state physical therapy organization. Search APTA-TX and reach out to see if they have mentorship programs or can help connect you with information and professionals in your area.

Case recommends the following next steps:

Shadow in a variety of field settings/specialties (outpatient, sports, pediatrics, hospital)
Contact APTA-TX for information and possibly volunteer and mentorship opportunities.
