I am not sure the question asking for becoming an engineer or doing engineering something. However, there are questions how to become an engineer in several fields. you can research for those questions. I will answer the Engineering part.
To Engineer, you must consider the goal you want to get.
1. Does it realistic? You can try to define Physical Laws and Principles, but believe me, most people who make things that go against nature are found to be fraud.
2. Ask the question: To do this task, what mechanism will do the job? is there any regulation? what are alternative options?
3. Build a model or prototype.
4. Test the model.
5. Fix the model if needed.
6. Repeat the process until you satisfy with the result.
