Laura’s Answer

I think the secret is not the time, the secret is how well you work. If you are a hard worker and do whatever you do with passion, you will get there as soon as you think

Frank’s Answer

I am currently a document specialist for a worldwide insurance company. I enjoy my job and the pay is reasonably good. My path to find my life's work was a roundabout journey. I did not know what I wanted to do when I graduated high school. I liked airplanes so I applied at a community college that had flight training. I took flying lessons (very expensive) and found out that my eyesight was not good enough to pursue that field as a career. Eye surgery was not available in the 1980's. I then took real estate courses and became a real estate salesperson for 9 years before realizing that I liked detail, behind-the-scenes work more than sales work. That started my path to office/administrative work. It was 1993, when I found a job I really enjoyed creating loan documents. When I was laid off, I worked at a large nationwide mortgage company at a call center and worked my way to become a technical writer. After more than 13 years at that company I was laid off again and joined the company I am now part of, managing hundreds of annuity documents. I love my job, but it was a process of discovery. It can take 1-2 years or it can take 10-20 years or more to get to a particular position. The key is to enjoy every step of your career path and you'll continue to move forward.

Frank recommends the following next steps:

Find out what you love to do. (mental tasks, hands-on, creative etc). Perhaps take a career quiz online to help you discover your strengths.
Find classes and/or jobs that allow you to work in an industry that focuses on the things you enjoy and are good at. Suggestion: At first, you may have to work in a job that is not too glamorous.
Strive to be the best in whatever job you do and you will be recognized by others. Excellence in your work will make it likely that you will advance to positions of higher responsibility.
