I would encourage you to look into free online courses available through sources like ItunesU (if you have an Apple device) or Coursera. It is easy to search for free online course that can help you begin to understand the topic.

Start with searching these sites.

G. Mark’s Answer

There are all sorts of sources of technical and scholarly information, including text books and online studies. But the thing you need to give you an edge as well as motivation is to look at all the stories about research and achievements in your chosen areas on the web and in the news. This is what separates the "book learning" from the "book learning and passion" crowd. And these are the people that drive technology.
