Cleo’s Answer

Hi Leyla, the first thing you should do is not give up on yourself. Take it one day at a time. Then, find the resources that are available to you. Is there youth centres or planned parenthood in your area? Some family or friends who could help you once the pregnancy is over? Whatever the answer is, do not panic and trust yourself.

Partner with other mothers and family's. You could try taking turns looking after each other's children. Make sure that you are getting good sleep!

Hi - I agree with Cleo's advice on seeking out available resources to help you with the dual responsibility of parenting and getting your education. I bet you'd be surprised at what's available. Additionally, know that as hard as it will be to manage both, both responsibilities are extremely important and after the few years it will take you to graduate high school and consider further education, you'll be proud of your accomplishments as they will set you up for the rest of your life!

Gloria’s Answer

Hi Layla,

I have known a few people who had children while they were in high school and college. School and family is a tricky balance of time and money. Those are the areas where a person can have the most trouble. It can be easier if you create a support network around you. That can be everything from having someone who can take the baby while you are studying to have fellow students who can help you learn a subject. It is about creating networks that you can depend on when one of the tasks has to dominate your life for a while - like the final exam you have to take at the same time a baby has a doctor's appointment.

Time is another element. You have to become very good about managing your time. That can most easily be done by scheduling whatever you can. This will include documenting in a calendar important dates around classes and family. And sometimes you are going to need to say no to something. You will miss important events because of school. You may have to stay up late to do homework.

Family and school is challenging, but not impossible to achieve. You have to be willing to ask for help both at home or at school. Don't try to do it all on your own.
