Krishna Chaitanya’s Answer

You always work in groups where ever you go. At times it may appear like you are contributing individually but you will still need to work with different stakeholders to ensure that your work is adding value to your organization. Especially, different data teams work together as we now have different areas in data like data governance, data analytics, data science etc. Collaboration is key to value data as an asset and deliver value to the organization.

Harish’s Answer

Hi Omar,

IT Industry as a whole always works as a Team. Nowadays we also have tools that help work in a more Hybrid manner where you discuss as a team how you want to approach a solution and then everyone has their part where they just go in one corner and continue to work towards completion of their part and then again you gather around as a team and put things together to see how the final solution looks like.

Hope this helps.

Abbas’s Answer

Hardly anyone works by oneself these days and the individual work done is part of a bigger team goal. Particularly in the area of technology, it is possible for individuals to work remotely from their home or from a small office where none of their colleagues may be colocated with them. But with help of collaboration technologies, individuals and teams are able to operate as if they are physically together.

In my case, majority of my team is not in the same office/city as me, with a few in other countries.

Priya’s Answer

Working in groups is a necessity. When every member in the team contributes and gives it their best, the outcomes are far superior than the work of any one individual. The overall sum is greater than the sum of its individual parts, provided the teams are working effectively. Having said that, in our regular day to day routine there is always something we have to deliver individually as well as work in a team setting.

C’s Answer

You will basically always work in teams on successful data projects. The skillsets that are required to get a project across the finish line tend to be fair too varied for any single person to complete:
* Data Engineering to get the data from the source systems and cleaned up into a useable state
* Data Scientists to perform the heavy mathematical lifting
* Data Analytics to focus the answers on business oriented solutions
* Business users to provide the feedback on the provide results and/or provide requirements
* Platform administrators to keep the (very large, very complex) systems up and running

Aside from the individual roles, it's better to work in teams as it helps to keep the creep of individual biases into the data models. Having team members with which you can discuss your approaches will help refine process and produce better results.

Jennifer’s Answer

Hi, Omar! It depends on the project, but nearly all projects have components of both self work and group work. I meet with my team regularly to determine what their needs are and what I can do for them. We often break into smaller teams (or groups) to work on projects. Everyone is responsible for part of the job. The analysis and data stuff is usually on my own, but I am responsible for making sure it meets everyone’s needs and ideals for goals that should be met.

I am in groups that we have same role and do the same type of works (data analyst), but we have to work as individual on the tasks assigned to me. So I will say I am working in groups and by myself.

Sangameshwar’s Answer

It all depends on the type of work. But mostly I feel that teamwork will yield more results than an individual(yourself).
In teams, there is collaboration, exchange of information, learning/correcting mistakes, better ways to do things & diverse approach for a problem.

Thulasinathan’s Answer

As humans we exist in (civilized) communities and every human being must realize during the course of ones life there are 2 stages we live through : -

1. Dependence
2. Independent
3. Interdependence

Stages [1] and [2] are limited by what they can get or deliver, however [3] is the stage where the society and individual benefit the maximum.

The above applies to the professional life as well, with the help or influence of other success is difficult to achieve.

I suggest please read the Book - 7 HAbits of HIghly Effective People by Stephen Covey

Corley’s Answer

The answer is both for me, but my case is a little different as I work as a Senior Network Engineer for a Multi-national and am based out of Tokyo, Japan. I typically have to sync with groups early in the morning and work on my own throughout the day until the U.S. team's start rolling back on shift.

I think most teams now days are quite virtualized, so understanding how to use Collaboration tools like WebEx or Slack will help you work better with your teams.

Sheila’s Answer

Hello Omar:

I agree with the comments already mentioned. . . I'd like to add a different perspective by focusing on the tools that we use at my company to help us work effectively and efficiently. Some of those tools that we use for collaboration and productivity include:
* WebEx (meetings)
* OneNote (to archive your projects into a notebook format)
* OneDrive (we share and edit files across multiple web platforms)
* Telepresence (for face-to-face interaction. Although you can do this via WebEx on video)
* Internal websites (tSpace, Wiki, SharePoint), Q messenger

I wish you much success on your journey. Best of luck to you!

Rebecca’s Answer

HI Omar! I work in groups and by myself when working on data projects. I am currently working on a project for AT&T to solve a data problem and provide recomendations for leadership to make good decisions in rationalizing our technology stack for the future. So, I have a formal group (scrum team) that I work with to make progress with the project and collectively pull the data in so we can conduct analysis. But, too I work on my own on the side to research data sources and effiencent methods in using the data.

So a little bit of both in my world.

Here is a great article that gives more insight to data science and how they work with teams. Check out the Some Data Science Teams section. https://www.kdnuggets.com/2019/04/why-data-scientists-need-work-groups.html

Rebecca recommends the following next steps:

Research more about data science teams on the internet
Determine if you are an introvert or extrovert
Decide if being apart of a data science team interest you as a career.

Victor’s Answer

hi Omar!,

in Teams, today is pretty hard to do everything yourself alone, you need to rely on others to complete your job, there are so many areas in the IT field that is not practical to know everything and try to do everything, I will never be able to complete all my tasks alone. Still there are some small tasks that I can complete by myself but if you want to make bigger impact in your company you will need to work with others and be collaborative.

Bhabani’s Answer

I would prefer to work in a group as I believe much more work can be accomplished when everyone is pulling together.

I feel more motivated when I work with a group. I enjoy having other people around to bounce ideas off of. I find that one person can say something that jogs your mind and prompts you to come up with a completely new creative thought or idea. I enjoy that kind of experience. Plus, I feel that everyone has something different to contribute to an effort because we all come from such diverse backgrounds.

Madison’s Answer

I am a Data Scientist and all of my work is done alongside others. This is because we have large projects that require multiple roles (data scientist, developer, etc) which cannot be accomplished by one person. However, depending on the project I may collaborate closely with other data scientists, or my daily work may be mostly solitary with regular check-ins with the rest of the team.
