Hi, Myla—I think you mean a medical doctor here? There are developmental pediatricians and psychiatrists and there are pediatric neurologists. Many other doctors specialize in working with children who have special needs but will see other people as well. These include dentists, orthodontists, psychologists, audiologists, and psychopharmacologists.

There are also many things you can do with a PhD. You could research and teach special needs children. You could also get an advanced degree in speech, occupational and physical therapy, library sciences, social workers, therapists, and autism spectrum disorder specialists.

Absolutely, I'm sure there are multiple options, but my grandmother is a developmental pediatrician. The work is difficult and can be emotionally draining, but she made a huge difference in the lives of her patients and their families.

There are doctoral degrees in education that may lead you to manage centers for special education children or lead the education of special education students in schools, colleges, and universities. In my experience at the college I teach there are services for students with disabilities and you can work in such services. Also medical doctors may be assigned to functions working with patients with disabilities.
