Megan’s Answer

I agree with the other two responses, plus do want to add that some schools will offer college credit for internships. The University that I attended offer an elective (3 hours) for a part-time internship that I completed. Hands on work in your field allows for learning, which is valuable t your studies. I would double check with your college counselor or adviser. Best of luck!

Shannon’s Answer

Hi- Every school is different. Could you send an email to an academic counselor or even ask one of your professors who the best person at the college is to see if you could stay linked to the community college, while completing your internship. I actually did this when I was in college (I worked at the state house of representatives full-time, and so did not take classes for a semester; but was able to still participate in student government, etc. But again, every college is different with their rules, so be sure to ask. Good luck!

Jacob’s Answer

Hi Knaya,

I believe this will likely depend on the college, but in general the answer is yes. I know of people who have gone to career fairs at colleges they did not attend and landed jobs / internships from them. At the end of the day the businesses chooses who they hire to be interns and most will be hiring from multiple colleges and will not be exclusive. If the program is specifically offered through a partnership with the college it may be more difficult, but in general I would say apply anyways. Worst thing they can say is no.

Jane’s Answer

These are great answers! I’ll add to Megan’s to say that if you’re enrolled in internship credit at your school, even if you aren’t taking any other classes that semester, you’re still an enrolled student. So, generally you’ll have access to all resources and services provided to any enrolled student. If you do an internship on your own, not for college credit, you’ll need to check with your advisor or academic counselor to see if you can access things like career services, student activities, etc, while you’re not enrolled. Good luck with your internship!

Jane recommends the following next steps:

Check in with your advisor about taking an internship for credit...is it possible? Does it count towards your degree?
Ask your advisor about campus resources if you do an internship on your own, for zero credit.
Be sure to ask your advisor or the Registrar what steps to complete to take a semester off, so that your bill and future registration are not negatively affected.
