Hi Kendall,
Really great question. Before getting into a nursing program, there are a number of prerequisites that need to be completed. Each school varies a little bit, so you will want to choose a nursing school and then work backwards to determine what courses you need to complete to apply.
There are 3 options to get into nursing.
1. Licenses Practicing Nurse
This is the fastest path, but the pay is much less and they can't do as much as an RN
2. Associate Degree in Nursing
This is a little longer but is what most Registered Nurses have.
3. Bachelor's of Nursing
This will also allow you to get your RN, but takes a little longer. In the long run this will give you a greater competitive advantage in the field because there is a high demand for BSN and not enough nurses with the degree to fill the demand.
Once you have your degree or certificate, you will need to take the NCLEX which is an exam required to get your license.
Please let me know if you have more questions. I would be happy to help. Most of my students are nurses.
Look up the Nursing School Almanac online. Great tool for researching nursing programs by area.

To get the RN license you have to go through an associates or bachelors program. Here is a helpful video:
