Kelleen’s Answer

Hi Abby! Probably not!

There are several things you can do to work in the dental industry! If you would like to be doctor, you will have to go to college and then medical school (a long time in school- approximately 8 years), but you would have the experience to start working with patients immediately - so no time at the front desk!

Another option - Dental Hygienist :

To become a dental hygienist, you will need to complete a 2 year degree (associates degree) at a college of your choice. Oftentimes, students are able to obtain an associates degree at a local community college. Check out this website for more information about how to become a dental hygienist: https://www.allalliedhealthschools.com/dental-assisting/how-to-become-dental-hygienist/

The pay is pretty good too! Look at that website under title "Dental Hygienist Salary" to learn more!

Lastly, if you decide on becoming a dental assistant - there is a good chance you will help with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments (working at the front desk).

Hope this answer helps! Best of luck in your decision!

Zach’s Answer

Hi Abby, the answer to your question, like Kelleen said, is probably not! The chance you'd be at a desk really depends on what education you have/what you want to do in the office. If you want to fill an administrative role, then most of your job will be at the desk. But, if you are interested in being a dentist/hygienist/dental assistant, your options are more open. Before you really start digging into a role, you'll want to shadow people in several different positions so you get a feel for the job. This involves observing their daily duties and learning more about their processes. From here, you may be able to get a more hands-on position if you have some class/job experience. As with most jobs, your options will open up with the more experience and education you have, so be sure to keep hitting the books if you're passionate about becoming a dentist. I hope this helps you feel more confident, good luck!
