Hi Hazel, to become a veterinarian you need to complete a college undergraduate program (usually 4 years). Then you need to complete a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program (another 4 years). Consider becoming a veterinary technician or assistant while working on your undergraduate degree. This will give you the opportunity to work with a veterinarian before entering into the doctor program (for the second 4 years). Best of luck to you!
Volunteer or work at a nearby animal shelter/refuge for experience

Your undergraduate degree will want to be something related to veterinary medicine. Some schools offer pre-vet degrees or concentration. Other options are zoology, biology, or chemistry. Vet school is very competitive to get in to, so it's important to have good grades all throughout your college career, as well as extracurriculars.
You are required to have experience hours prior to applying to veterinary school as well. These must be hours that you have worked in the field. You can get these hours by working as a farm hand, at a zoo, or veterinary assistant. You might also want to show other ways youre dedicated to the field, like volunteering at your local SPCA or Aquarium.
