Unfortunately, having to put animal down is sometimes required and needs to be done by a vet...But if you wish to work with animals, as Sherrie said, they are other ways than working as a vet. Have you considered becoming a vet's assistant? Or a trainer? an animal caretaker? an animal control worker? a zoologist? an animal shelter manager? There are so many other options!

Rachel’s Answer
While euthanizing animals is not the primary component of a vet's practice, it almost certainly is part of almost every vet's practice. When a situation arises in which an animal is suffering and cannot be helped, veterinarians are the ones who step up and end that suffering.

Sherrie’s Answer
Hi Hazel,
At times vets do have to make the best decision to either halt the suffering of a beloved animal, or in cases where an animal has been viscious/caused serious or deadly harm to a human or another animal, the law may require that the animal is euthanized. It's admirable that you don't wish to kill any animals, and there may be opportunities for you to work at an animal rescue agency or even as a vet/vet tech, without having to physically euthanize an animal. It appears that the mere idea of euthanizing animals is causing you great concern, and I would encourage you to keep in mind that life and death are both a part of the circle of nature.
Best wishes.
