Brian’s Answer

There are two levels of a military career, enlisted and commissioned officer. To join in an enlisted career you need to be at least a high school graduate. However, most enlisted career tracks are highly technical. Therefore every branch of the armed forces (army, navy, air force, marines), are looking for high school graduates who have done well in math and science, in addition to being physically fit.

To be a commissioned officer in the armed forces you need to have received at least a college degree. Here again it is even more competitive and each military branch looks for those with technical degrees (science or engineering).

Jacob’s Answer

Hi, Nathan,

Considering joining the military is an honorable endeavor. The military provides an extremely challenging but also very rewarding career path. Asking questions in the same vein as you posed here is a good idea. Military life is not for everyone. Researching, asking questions, and talking to those who have experience in the specialty(ies) that interest you are key to making the most out of your experience if you ultimately decide serving is the path you want to pursue.

For context, I am a former Army Infantry Rifle Platoon Leader. I was commissioned through the ROTC program at my college and served four years on active duty.

Each branch of the military has slightly different requirements to join both for officers and enlisted Soldiers/Sailors/Airmen/Marines. Different specialties have different requirements too. For example, a clinical lab scientist in the Army requires a bachelor's degree in medical technology while an infantryman has a considerably lower education requirement. The links below are each branch's career pages - put another way, those websites list all of the different specialties in which you can serve. If you click into a given speciality, it will give you additional information about the role, including the requirements/steps to join.

Again, I can't stress enough how important performing due diligence is. Research thoroughly and ask questions. I hope this answer helps get you started on that path - if you have more questions, feel free to add a comment to my answer. Good luck!

While the Services have similar eligibility requirements, they may also reserve the right to enlist recruits using criteria that are based on the needs or vacancies of the current mission.

Jerry’s Answer

This is for the Marine Corps only. First off, you must have a diploma or GED. They will also administer the ASVAB test that can determine what job you can get, it is just basic math, English, and other simple concepts. You must be able to pass a drug test and a medical exam, this just verifies there is nothing wrong with you medically. Don't lie or try to cheat. Next, you must be able to pass the minimum fitness standards for the Corps (They aren't hard, it's a 1.5 mile run, pullups, and situps). You will also get a background check to verify you don't have a criminal background. If you check all of these boxes, you're all good to go.
