Why don't people who die for a little bit remember what they saw when they died?

Theodore’s Answer

This is definitely a loaded question and there are many possible explanation both scientific and spiritual in nature:

1. Scientific:

The biochemical reactions taking place stimulate the limbic system of the brain inducing a dream like state where "memories" can be formed as a result of these impulses a persons has the "experience of a Out of Body Experience" (OBE) when in reality it was just a series of neurobiological chemical impulses.

2. Spiritual:

This is both tied to science and the unexplained areas of the spirit world. I happen to believe the memories of a person are actually stored outside of their body and the brain is like a computer decoding data and relaying it in a meaningful form. We live in a complex not well understood multidimensional universe where there are literally infinite number of possibilities. When a person dies there is a chemical released from the pineal gland that is thought to be the gateway to the spirit world. It is theorized that as a person dies this chemical is released in really high doses and this is what "opens the door" for the soul to move from this world to the next. It is said in the Bible and in other spiritual texts that the soul is bound to the body by an invisible "silver cord." This cord is severed during the life ending experience and the body then looses it animating vital force. Those that have a near death experience essentially have an OBE and they were so close to death that the soul made the journey while still tethered to the body and when the mechanics of the body are restored the soul is brought back immediately.

Keep asking questions of your reality and do not allow anyone dissuade you from your pursuit of truth and understanding reality. Science is the attempt to explain physical processes and physics principles. Anyone that says any science is settled is NOT a scientist or they have forgotten the meaning of the word.

Dr. Frank’s Answer

A near-death experience (NDE) is an event that happens when a dying person's soul goes out of his or her body and travels through time and space, gaining powerful new spiritual insights in the process and then returning to his or her physical body and recovering.

Although the specific causes of this part of near-death experiences remain unclear, tunnel vision can occur when blood and oxygen flow is depleted to the eye, as can happen with the extreme fear and oxygen loss that are both common to dying.

What Happens to the Brain During a Near-Death Experience. ... Scientists have discovered that after the heart stops, which is considered clinical death, the brain keeps on ticking. Electrical signals surge for roughly 30 seconds after the heart stops, slowly declining, until they stop altogether.

Lack of oxygen may also trigger temporal lobe seizures which causes hallucinations. These may be similar to a near-death experience. But the most widespread explanation for near-death experiences is the dying brain hypothesis.

As you see, during NDE the brain is barely functioning to keep basic metabolic functions running where memory is not prioritizing function!
