DAVID’s Answer
1. step one - graduate from an engineering school
2. step two - find a job as a civil engineer....many opportunities..consulting, cities, state, sales
3. improve your career over the years as a junior engineer to a senior engineer to a project manager, attain your PE, Professional Engineer license
4. work on many projects, solve problems, work as a team, mentor others
5. retire and say "that was a great career"
I can say this after 45 years, except am still working
In other words..the biggest job is to establish your career

Civil engineering is a huge field with many specializations, and each project is different. I think the biggest job is to learn, learn, learn. When you're a junior engineer, learn from senior engineers, learn from tradespeople, learn from your mistakes, learn from feedback. As you move through your career, continue to seek feedback, ask questions, and keep learning. This is true of every profession, but construction is uniquely broad, technical and ever-changing.
