Rick kicked it off right. Enlisted or commissioned? Which branch? Which Rate/MOS? These things matter.
Myself for instance:
I am an Enlisted Navy Sailor ad have been in for 14 years. To get where I am now, I have had to diversify my billet background by taking tough jobs in different areas of the Navy to show my versatility. It has been [reached since I joined to take full advantage of educational benefits, volunteer opportunities, and leaderships positions. I believe that these things have professionally and personally developed me, leading me into the direction to be ready to handle the stresses of being promoted.
The AF focuses on the same basic areas for promotion. Be fully qualified in your area of expertise, have positive promotion recommendations and evaluations, and display your maturity through leadership and followership.

It depends also if your looking at being an officer or enlisted. The Army/Navy and Marines basically use the same process with time and evaluations and military need for those ranks. The Air Force takes more time for enlisted to make rank so if your in it for the education and money then go with one of the other branches. The Air Force has its benefit's as well so do some more research.

When it comes to advancing in the military, there is a lot of different things that take into consideration, I am navy not air force but for us, our eval's get taken into consideration as well as test scores. To be a strong competitor in the enlisted ranks, you need to be well rounded, know your job, volunteer take any type of secondary education, whether it is certifications or college( the great thing is as long as you have something it looks good on you, so do what you're interested in), taking on more tasking which we call collateral duties also is something you want to do, as well as staying involved in your command. Hope this helps!
