Hi Nick,
The path toward a career in medicine begins with a 4-year college degree, then 4 years of medical school, then a 1-3 year training period referred to as internship and residency. To train as a surgeon, the residency period can be a bit longer than 3 years. The place to begin this journey is with your high school guidance counselor. Let him or her know that you want to go to a college that has a strong record of preparing students for medical school. Also, seek out a surgeon in your community and ask him or her about their journey. Maybe your school counselor can help make that connection for you? With persistence and motivation, you can do it. Good luck!

That is a very personal question because it depends on work ethic and natural academic ability. Surgeon have to be very good in both to make it through.

To be a competitive applicant, you need A's (maybe B's) in the pre-med classes, at least a 3.5 GPA (3.8 is better) and a strong MCAT score. Regardless of the college you attend, you will need to keep that GPA up and take an MCAT prep course to get the best possible score.
