Rachel’s Answer
My first operation that I assisted with was a below knee amputation. It was an elective case that was performed in the middle of the night due to high OR volumes at the time. The case made me realize the importance of performing elective cases during daylight with fresh surgeons and fresh staff if possible. The patient did fine, and the operation was completed without issue, but there was room for error that may not have been there had everyone not already been working for 12+ hours.

Insane! It was a Lap Chole (endoscopic) which went bad and turned open. The case lasted about 5 hours. I was nervous because it was a teaching institution and the attending was letting the med students and fellows call the shots. They were unsure of
Themselves which made it hard for me to anticipate the next steps. I’m thankful that I did well with anatomy so I was able to stay a step ahead of them. I impressed my proctors so I was able to get bigger cases as my train in went along.

My surgery rotation in medical school was in vascular surgery. I was told to hold a retractor during an aorto bifemoral bypass procedure and quizzed on the anatomy the whole time.
