To get a DVM (doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree) you need to attend a 4 year college and then a 4 year vet school- so 8 years after high school. There are a few schools that offer an accelerated program where the last two years of your undergrad degree are combined with the first two of vet school. The DVM qualifies you to be a general practitioner. If you want to specialize in something like surgery, sports medicine, etc you typically need to do a 1 year internship and then a 2-5 year residency.

Vet school unfortunately is the same time commitment as medical school. 4 years of college followed by 4 years of vet school.
