Jillian’s Answer

It does not make a difference on how many years. It's important that you are prepared. You can start a business at any time. While I was in high school I started small businesses on ebay and Amazon to learn the ropes. Working retail also gives you the necessary knowledge on how a business works. In a short amount of time you can start on the bottom and become a manager. Once you do this you could use the money you've earned to build your business.

Jillian recommends the following next steps:

Gain experience in management
Make a business plan
Calculate the finances you need and have back up support

Xiong’s Answer

The best time to start a business was last year. The second best time to start a business is now. If today, you feel confident in your quality of work and ability to service customers with your skills then now is the best time.

The success of a start-up Auto Body shop is not determined by how many years you have been working in Auto Body. It is determined by how you plan to run your Auto Body business: customer service, quality work, competitive pricing, and marketing.

Failing to plan is planning to fail. Have a plan. Then plan the best that you can but don't be afraid to fail either. If you stop yourself from starting your business because you are afraid of failing then you will never start your business.

No business is immune to failure, and find comfort in knowing that before many reached success they have failed many times, but with a plan. Why plan then? Because when you plan and fail you can go back and analyze your plan and where it went wrong, then you can get back up to plug those holes or you can pivot to a different business altogether. Without a plan, you leave yourself vulnerable to the sloppy mistakes of no plan.

Xiong recommends the following next steps:

Decide to start your business
Learn the skills required for Auto & Body, or Network with technicians already have skills in Auto & Body
Research online how to start a business in your local area. Or find a business specialist (many public libraries or local organizations offer free help)
Open your business
