Dada’s Answer

Hi Peter ,

You should be a good at drawing if you want to excel as a painter.
You need not use a palette while drawing an object.
As for a painting you will learn more credo behind the use of color, and comprehend to create a composition or a colour pattern in its given early stage of developing a style to appeal and create a meaning .
Lines and shades give a character to a drawing which is significant .

Judith’s Answer

I have found in painting that with certain brushes such as a flat or fan brush, you can sketch in your work quickly with a base color. It is quite similar to a gesture drawing when you place in the composition in quick strokes. Going back to work a drawing or painting may actuate with blending tones in pastels with drawing, or with washes and layers of color in paintings. This is also possible in charcoals or conte crayons. When determining the angle of the light, you can then place shadows to add dimension to either composition.

Both drawing and painting can then be elaborated with details of you choice. Knowing when a work is finished is completely the interpretation of the artist.

Painting may be harder for some because it requires a more steady hand. I believe that it is possible to compensate for this in developing your own style. I hope that you will continue to practice every day. Someone told me once that if you dabble at something for many years you get pretty good at it. Go ahead and dabble to get your works developed.

Summer’s Answer

Drawing allows you to get certain details in regards to shading.
The manipulation of shapes and objects can be achieved with a 3-D effect when drawing with graphite pencil, charcoal and chalk.
This is also possible with paint in a way, though the end result is obvious.
I will be experimenting with this technique to be able to compare the two in my work.
Paintings last longer than drawings do, in terms of shelf or museum life.
I love the simplicity of being able to create a drawing on anything it will adhere to, without the need of any thing other than an eraser.
Where with painting you will need water, a brush, paints, an area to paint in, a place to dry the piece, a wash station for you, your brushes, the palette, possibly your clothing etc.
Not that by any means this should infer that one is better than the other.
Just different. ~.~

Misty’s Answer

Hi Peter.

Great question.

There are a lot of similarities in painting and drawing just as there are differences.

Similarties:
both can produce a wonderful piece of art
both can be displayed
both can be therapeutic
both can mix colors and mediums for example chalk vs pencil for drawing and oil vs. acrylic for painting
both can convey feeling and meaning.

Differences:
Painting takes longer as you have to get the proper brush strokes to get the desired look
Painting is a lot easier to use abstract format with color
Painting can be more geometric in nature
Painting can be done on a variety of canvases and in a variety of sizes
Painting is more expensive based on the different brushes and paints and canvases
it is easier to mix color when painting
you can use different types of technique in painting that is not able to be achieved in drawing

hope this helps.
