Hello Matt,
Hope all is well. Regarding the pay, I would focus on the following:
1. Location
2. Level of difficulty
3. Level of education required
4. Market Need
While it is very difficult for me to be able to answer that question, I can provide some guidance as my family members are mechanics who repair semi truck engines and other truck maintenance work here in Chicago.
Will you be fixing semi truck engines? Would it be large industrial / commercial machines? Would it be diesel engines such as those found in duallys?
I would suggest you first hone in on a specific field and from their start doing your research. To give you an answer, my friend was in a program in high school and started repairing engineers once graduated for school busses / small fleets and is now working fixing refeers on semi trailers (those that carry refrigerated goods, etc. ).
He did not go to college nor did he go to a trade school but is currently making around 60k a year.
The opportunities are endless, just make sure that you hone in on one thing you would like to do. Hope everything goes well!
Thanks!
