Kimberly’s Answer
Private investigators often work independently (they are their own boss) or for a company. Clients (people wanting to hire an investigator) will contact you or your company and ask you to complete a task such as; locating an individual, catch someone committing insurance fraud or a suspected cheating spouse, etc.
Detective often work for a law enforcement agency and investigate crimes occurred.
The types of jobs or cases you receive and how much work you are given is often determined by where you work and the amount of crime in your city. For example; large cities have more people so they would most likely have more crimes and clients.

Kimberly is correct. Private Investigators tend to be retired law enforcement Detectives who want to continue or further their working life. Or retired FBI or other state law enforcement agency investigators or detectives.
Detectives, are often tasked with specific types of crimes, depending on the size of the agency and the area they work (urban or rual). I work for a Sheriff's Office in a large Texas town, but our jurisdiction is the county and not the city (which has it's Police Department). The Detectives I work with are either Major Crimes Unit (Homicide/Sex Crimes) or Criminal Investigation (Burglary or Financial Crimes) investigators. These detectives usually have about 15 to 20 cases at most times that they are dealing with...in various ways. A homicide takes precedents over all other crimes...and they must be investigated to the fullest until there are no leads or the case is solved. A burglary or financial crime will take time and may takes months or years to conclude...so they are constantly working cases. There really is no down time.
