Hi Shalini -

The accounting field has a great number of job opportunities and can provide you with a very meaningful and rewarding career. I have certainly enjoyed the 7 years I've spent thus far in public accounting. I agree with the advice that Laura gave above. As a point of reference, in order to obtain my CPA license in Texas I had to meet the following criteria:

- At least 150 college hours including 30 hours of accounting and 24 hours of business courses
- Hold a bachelor's degree or higher
- Pass all 4 section of the CPA exam
- Complete 1 year of paid or volunteer work experience under the supervision of a CPA
- Complete 3 hour state approved ethics course

I hope that helps! Please me know if you have further questions about any of these requirements as I'd be happy to elaborate. Finally, I'll note that while holding a CPA is certainly not a requirement for all accounting jobs, it's highly recommended and can provide you with many additional opportunities. Good luck! accounting cpa

Laura’s Answer

Hi Shalini,

I am an accounting professional and have the US equivalent of a "chartered accountant" which is known here as a CPA or certified public accountant. If this is the route you are considering you should find resources that explain the requirements for becoming a licensed accountant as this varies by country and within the US, by state. If you are planning on staying in California after school, use the CalCPA.org website to learn what the state requirements are. There are typically a certain number of accounting credits needed as well as a certain number of "general" credits needed which can be met by taking elective courses. I hope this helps as I am not sure what the 10th std is.

Hello Shalini. Different countries have different requirements for Chartered Accountant (CA) qualifications. It is best to research which courses/degrees are accepted as prerequisites for the program. In general, there are the basic accounting courses like bookkeeping, cost accounting, intermediate accounting, etc. Although there may be some electives, if you are really interested in the CA program, the more accounting courses you can take will be helpful.
