Divya’s Answer

It depends on the stream you have chosen however, counseling is a kind of 2 way discussion where you will be asked questions about your academics preferences and on the basis of the rank obtained, a particular choice gets reserved in the institution.

Divya recommends the following next steps:

Be clear on your career goals
Extra-curricular Activities

David’s Answer

I think they will ask you what kind of career do you want to have and how that is fitting with the academic courses that you are taking. They might also ask if you want to go to graduate school. Are the courses you are taking preparing you for the future?

What courses do you really like and do well at - what are the career opportunities associated with those courses.

Steven’s Answer

There are many different counselors related to college, including ones that deal with admissions, academics, career services, and placements. I think by far the most common one people would visit while at school would be the career services counselors.

The career service counselors are there so that they can help you land the job you really want after college. They are able to recommend companies, either locally or internationally, give you tips and advice on your resume/ job search/ interviews, and they also can connect you with alumni from the university that have worked in areas that you have a passion to work in. Because they provide so many services, they have a wide range of questions that they could ask you, for whatever your purpose of the visit is.

Example, if you are looking for suitable jobs after college, they would ask questions such as "what industries are you most interested in?" and "what talents and skills have you picked up or mastered?" If you are already looking at specific jobs, you can bring in your resume and the job description, and they can ask you interview-style questions that they feel is relevant to the job as well as your resume. The point is to know what you are going to a counselor to accomplish, and then to convey that thought to them so that they can actually help you as effectively as possible.

Hope that helps, good luck with everything!

Anna’s Answer

Raven,

I am an academic advisor/counselor - stating that first, to know what my perspective is and expertise in relation to your question.

As Steven pointed, there are different kind of counselors in college:
academic counselors (they are often called academic advisors as well)
career counselors
financial aid counselors
psychological counselors

At some places, there are counselors that combine several of these functions, and at rare institutions you may have a 'general' counselor who is trained in all 4 areas and performs all 4 functions.

All of these people are there to help students - and their questions are geared towards learning how to better assist you; which sometimes can be questions that can help you to get to know yourself better, reflect on your experiences, expectations, hopes, challenges, etc. The questions they will ask will depend on the reason you are talking to them.

All these different types of college counselors are people I would encourage you to be very open and honest with. The more open and honest you are, the more you will benefit from their services. Also, if you are talking to an academic counselor and they suggest you get in touch with another type of college counselor, I'd encourage you to follow their recommendation(s).
