Yes, getting an internship is a terrific idea. Don't forget though that social media can be your best foot in the door. It wasn't around when I was first entering the broadcast journalism field and I wish it was. Find a niche subject/topic that you're interested in and create your own podcast, YouTube channel, TikTok, etc. Do you own stories. Research, interview, write and record yourself and post. Do it a lot. Be funny. Be wise. Be true. Develop something you're proud of. Possibly develop a little bit of a following. Be discoverable. Promote yourself to local media and send them your links. Instead of asking for a job, find a mentor and ask for feedback. That could develop into a job lead.

You will definitely want to live in a television hub where the limited TV jobs tha do become available are at your doorstep. You will want to go out and meet as many people in the industry as possible to get your foot in. Once you do you slowly make your way up through hard work and meager pay as a showrunner. Slowly but surely you will rise the ladder and if your bosses like you they will help you on your path. Unlike most careers unfortunately, there is no way to ensure that position and a ton is about luck, connections, and a head full of hair.

Stefania’s Answer

Hello Sindhu,
While I have little experience with Indian television and media, what we typically would suggest in the US is for a student to try and obtain an internship at a network of their choice. Explore what television /media stations you most enjoy and if you know anyone that can make some introductions that would be great. Otherwise, reach out to them with your interest and ask if they offer internship programs for you to gain a little experience -- or if not that, if someone there is willing to talk to you about their job in a conversation so you can get a better feeling for what the job is like as you are exploring career options.

Good luck.
