If I wanted to be a pediatrician, I would do the following:
Google Search: colleges for pediatricians
This will then show many other questions “People also ask”.
Determine if you want to be in state or out of state for college as out of state tuition is higher.
If in state for instance, Google search: Atlanta, GA pediatricians. You can then pull up various offices and look at their websites. You can then view the pediatricians at the office and see where they studied as you will find it varies.
My son’s pediatrician is perfect for us and looking at their website she was in state as follows - Undergraduate education at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, where she graduated with honors in Biology. She then attended the University Of North Carolina School of Medicine, before completing her pediatric training at East Carolina University.
Bottom line, I do not believe there is a best college for any field of study. It depends upon the individual and what they put into it overall. Still do your research as there are many factors to consider such as cost, location, accreditation, etc. I also attended North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, but my undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. They are many different paths to take. Choose yours wisely. It will be right for you!

Carl’s Answer

Hi Deanna,

I would recommend a college that meets your social and academic needs. You also want to consider colleges that will have the least financial burden. You may incur a lot of debt in medical school. If you are interested in medical school, I'm guessing you have really good grades and have the potential to earn many scholarships that will help defray the costs of college. Please take that into consideration when choosing a college. Often students look at lists of "Best Colleges" but at the end of the day, you have to go to the college that is best for you. That includes taking into consideration if it is a good academic fit with your learning style, the social setting, and the financial responsibility. A college can set the foundation for your social life for the rest of your life. Does the college have the type of people that you want to be around. Is it a college that provides individual attention or are you in an auditorium setting for the majority of your core classes. Sometimes big colleges will provide a recognizable name that may open doors but a smaller college may give you more intimate knowledge of your field of study. There are a lot of things to consider when making this decision. There isn't a one discipline or one major that will prepare you for medical school so please consider this when making your decision. Please look at my next steps for advise on seeking out mentors and gaining a better understanding of your path to becoming a pediatrician.

Carl recommends the following next steps:

Take some college visits to check out the social and academic setting of the institution.
Seek out a pediatrician and solicit them to be your mentor. They will have a lot of insight and guidance for your.
Seek out a college student that is pre-med and ask them to serve as a mentor. Work out an arrangement where you can talk to them once a month for guidance.
Finally, seek out a medical student that can serve as a mentor to you. Same advice. Work out an arrangement where you can talk to them once a month for guidance.
