Although badminton won’t be the sole reason for my admission in Stanford if it happens , will it be at least helpful to a certain extent

As it is a club sport and i will have a chance to play there and in some of the competitions they participate in, will badminton have atleast some contribution to my resume or not?

Diane’s Answer

In my experience, all universities look for well-rounded students with diverse backgrounds and interests. So, I would advise that you include your participation in the club sport and if you are doing more with it than playing on a team (are you a team captain, an officer or committee member in the club, volunteering in some way to support the club, etc.?) that will make you look even stronger as you are not only doing something outside of academia, you are taking a leadership role, too! I wish you all the best!

Theodore’s Answer

Colleges look at a number of different factors for college admissions, so playing a sport will be helpful in that respect. Entrance exam scores are also important along with your GPA so don't forget about that. If you can include any positions on the team you've been involved in or how you've made a contribution that can do a lot to make you stand out. Overall, focus on how you can make yourself stand out as an individual not just a student.

John’s Answer

Hey Priyanka,

It's you as a whole person that colleges should be interested in. So if Badminton is something that is a part of your life, I would include it. Additionally, sports are important to showing that you are well rounded. If you have had a leadership role in the club, had any impressive accomplishments, or feats, I would include that as well.

Thank you,
John

Nishanth’s Answer

Hello Priyanka,

Good to see that you are shooting for the stars. Can you share more information about what program you will be applying to? And a little bit of your background will help too.

But with the given information, I'd say any sports engagement can help as long as it is significant. For example, if you are a state or national champion, absolutely. Or if you have taken initiatives to make badminton more accessible or popular in your community, that'd help as well.

So, the answer depends on what program you are looking at, what does your rest of the profile look like and what is your real contribution/achievement in badminton. Hope that helped.
Thank you comment icon Thank you sir for providing me with this information. I am interested in pursuing CS and Economics double major. Currently, I am writing a book on economics covering the major socio economic issues in our country. I also teach badminton to a group of underprivileged kids in my society and am the captain of my school badminton team. Will that help? Priyanka
Thank you comment icon Both of them sound amazing. They will definitely help. Please make sure that you are telling your true story behind both these initiatives. Give the panel an insight into your brain/heart and that should do the trick. Good luck! Nishanth Kadiyala
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much! Priyanka

Hi Priyanka, if you've already seen your future team's website, great! http://web.stanford.edu/group/badminton/cgi-bin/wordpress/

Here's the great thing about a resume, it's a reflection of your interests and activities...it helps someone learn what you bring to the table. An admissions team at a university is looking for more than outstanding grades. They want to see if an applicant has the ability to contribute to a diverse culture while positively impacting the community. Sports are a great way to do that. I think your passion for badminton is a plus!

Try reaching out the the team via email at their website to ask what their majors are. Maybe you'll learn something about Stanford that you can include in your personal statement of why you wish to attend.
