I know a few coaches on the D1 college level. They have all told me the most important thing about being a coach is creating a solid coaching philosophy. This may sound unimportant, but my friends that are coaches have all said understanding what they want out of players has helped them land the jobs they have and form a quick, meaningful bond with their players. I would start of with your awareness about all the rules and regulations of basketball. Even if you are short you need to be in a position to know the techniques on how to shoot the ball , dribble and pass , etc. The basics are important.

Watch as many games as you'd like. Have a head start , enroll yourself in a local league.

I am not a coach , I am 5'11 amateur basketball player who played in high school. I play in a local club right now. Although I don't always play in the main 5 I am glad to be able to have this opportunity to play.

P.S : Don't forget to watch "The last dance" on Netflix.
