Janet’s Answer

I would start by volunteering - food banks, feeding the homeless, the blind, the elderly. There are lots of options. Once there you can talk to the employees and see what path they took and see if you like it. You can also look into culinary programs and they may have career assistance and can point you in various directions.

You may find your interest in cooking and helping people might create an opportunity for you in the field of nutrition/dietary specialists. These individuals are experts in the field of food and nutrition. They advise people on what to eat in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal. They work in many settings, including hospitals, cafeterias, nursing homes, and schools. Some are self-employed with their own practice

Nancy’s Answer

There is a charity called World Central Kitchen (https://wck.org/) whose purpose is to go to disaster zones and serve meals. After Hurricane Maria, they fed many Puerto Ricans a hot meal though the island was without electricity and many people had lost their homes.

I would suggest going to culinary school to get your degree and finding a normal job as a chef. When the time comes, volunteer to help deploy with them to cook meals.

You could also try working full time at this charity or many others that focus on feeding the hungry.

Simeon’s Answer

It sounds like you would be interested in doing social work. There are a lot of opportunities to help others by cooking within the social work field. In addition to social work courses, you might also try doing a business minor to help in learning how to run a non-profit in case you want to start your own non-profit someday. Some universities even offer a specific degree in non-profit management.
