In addition to the above and to any skill you might learn, I think that to be an accountant you need to work with method, be organized and have strong values and principles.

You need to make sure that what you do is accurate and control that nothing wrong is happening.
You need to enjoy working with systems and solve problems, because people will often ask you for solutions to their issues.

It depends on what professional certification you may want. Depending on the level of the position you can take accounting classes in high school (if they are offered), you can get an associates degree at a technical or junior college or you can get a bachelor degree in accounting. If you want to become a CPA (rules vary by state) you would need to attain a minimum number of hours of education (150 hours) with specific hours in accoutning, tax or other areas. These vary by the program at each college or university. And then take the CPA exam and successfully pass all parts plus some states require work experience.

Rose’s Answer

My first job out of college (Business Administration/Accounting major) was at a regional bank. I moved money between credit card associations like Visa and local stores and restaurants. It was actually very fun and interesting.

Working in financial services or private industry is very different than working in public accounting doing auditing or taxation, but a degree in Business or Accounting is a good foundation either way.

While you are earning your degree, you can work in a bank as a teller, data entry or file clerk. There are also back office accounting functions that may not require a degree, like payroll and accounts payable. Almost every bank job requires you to be 18 years old and pass a drug test and background check.
