What are some majors and/or minors you suggest for students who aren't sure what job they want to do?

I'm going to college soon and not at all sure what I want to do with my life afterwards. What general degrees do you suggest I look into? #college #college-major #colleges

Hey Anne,

1st - I'd say start with what you are passionate about.

But, if you have absolutely no idea, this was my experience:

I went into Business Management since I knew there was a chance for a competitive starting salary, opportunity for career advancement & job stability. Many people do not go into a career from their major/minor though & go through multiple career changes before finding the right one - so I wouldn't stress too much.

Some Business majors that you might be interested in are Accounting, Project Management, Hospitality & Marketing. The core classes [Prereq. classes you take during Freshman year] are usually the same for all business majors. You can always just go into Business & find a specialization later.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

Patty

Hi there!
You're smart to consider a more general degree, especially if you're not sure what career to pursue. There are a few degrees I recommend considering, that may not be so "obvious": Journalism, which is the route I took, that most think is specific for careers that involve some form of writing/editing, business, or psychology. With these majors (and several others) your career options are endless. Contrary to what you may think, your major in college isn't something a lot of companies will look at at all, and for those that do they won't dwell on it if it's not the "ideal" major for the role you're applying for. As mentioned above, definitely consider your passion and interests, as choosing a major is more so about learning more about subjects that you're excited about.

Wow! How about the following fields...

Project Management, Technology related fields, medicine, law, hotel mgmt., food services, professor/teacher, perhaps a trade-like skill set - such as an electrician, plumber, etc. It is possible for an individual to have 2-3 careers during his/her lifetime. Basically, you have to figure out what will make you happy, since you will experience 75% of your day/life working...

I hope this information is helpful to you. :)

Hi, Anne...from my experience, I'd suggest exploring a major in a field that would give you a general understanding of how the corporate world works - the fundamentals so to speak. Business Administration for example. And, you could couple that with a minor in an area that you feel passionate about. And try not to stress too much about your major at the outset as the first two years of school are focused on fulfilling your core requirements! Have fun, explore lots of on-campus activities to stretch yourself and explore your interests!
