I am a fashion designer, have been one for the last 18 years. I do a lot of research, shopping, drawing and have worked crazy hours over the years. It is a hard cut throat industry. You have to truly have the passion or it will be too hard. And now after covid it will be more difficult. You are more then welcome to ask me any questions you have.

Look into FIDM, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. It is a school that focuses mainly in various parts of the fashion industry. I am sure there are other schools like FIDM but, that is one that I know of because they have a campus in downtown Los Angeles.

Fashion design is an art form for wearables. It can include accessories as well. It involves fabric design, cut of cloth, and sewing professionally. Many schools teach basics in this discipline. It is a highly competitive field from the outset and high level success needs great networking skills.
As a newcomer to the field, you may wish to hone your skills in a single area of focus such as outerwear, accessories etc. It is important to study trends while developing your own voice within this. If you wish to remain local, you may feature your products at nearby retail outlets which like to offer unique items. You could also expand by featuring your product on such sites as Etsy and pop-ups.
A personal friend researched historical design and became the head costume designer for a renown opera company.
It is important to identify what you personally wish to design and go about producing and marketing that item. The actual creation is only one of the steps. Networking, marketing and doing your footwork will help your product to set trends. Above all, believe in yourself. Don't lose faith, but adapt when necessary. Wishing you all the best.
