What is the simplest way to get into the world of CyberSecurity?
I am a freshman at Cal Poly Pomona majoring in Computer Information Systems. I would like to develop my technical skills but I am not quite sure where to start. Any advice would be helpful, thank you. #business

Pursuing internships is a crucial way to get real world experience and develop a marketable skillset that will carry you through life.
But to get started in the field, peruse job postings in what you are interested in to get an idea of what skills are required for a job, and then study those skills. Start to look at certifications you can get in your field to make yourself more marketable.
i.e. a job posting for Cyber Security Specialist I just found asks for skills such as:
- Experience in computer and network systems administration and cybersecurity (including experience with operating systems, firewalls, endpoint security, intrusion protection systems).
- Experience with Risk Management Framework (RMF) Certification and Authorization
- Maintain the RMF package and artifacts in the applicable databases (e.g. eMASS, Intelink site).
And the same job posting even asks that you have certifications in the following:
- Certified in the following Operating Systems/Operating Environments (product and version) as required including privileged access: RHCSA (Red Hat Certified Systems Administrator) or RHCSE (Red Hat Certified Systems Engineer); Certified Information Security Information Professional (CISSP); Windows Server/Desktop Administrator
This should help you get an idea of the direction to move in.

I think the main question you should be asking is what part of Cybersecurity interest you. Computer information systems is a wide field and can have applicability in a number of different industries. I think here are few things you can do to understand a bit more.
-Cybersecurity has need a number of areas. Example cryptography, machine learning data analysis. See if you are going to take any specific courses which align to cybersecurity and that will help you understand what interests you most.
Then look at a project which you can do in that applicable are and look for internships. There are also certification you can do on cybersecurity. I think for CIS background cybersecurity analytics could a areas you can explore.

I'm not in computer science, but I'm in the technology field. It's important that you look for internship opportunities, in your field or even a closely related field. Many companies have open applications for internship, so you can look for those. However, you should be most successful talking to people you meet about internships. Talk to your family members and friends for suggestions and look for internship resources at the school. Think of a cool company you'd like to learn about, for example Blizzard, and look on their website for what they have to offer students

CyberSecurity is an interesting field. As more companies go digital, this is very important. I am glad you are paying attention to the market trends. Take classes around this , see if you can do internship in companies that are in security domain to develop relevant work experience. Consulting is a great practice to join to try out many of these new fields - Deloitte and Accenture are firms that do IT consulting that lets you try new domains. Hope this helps
