What kind of CyberSecurity positions are available?
I am a freshman at Cal Poly Pomona majoring in Computer Information Systems. I would like to develop my technical skills but I am not quite sure where to start. Any advice would be helpful, thank you. #career

Hi Michael,
Great question and in the field of technology and specifically cybersecurity there are many paths you can take. Pursuing a degree in technology is an obvious first step and with an interest in specific fields I recommend doing as much research as you can in the field(s) you are most interested in and then pursuing individuals, companies and groups that are currently focused on that discipline. These can be great resources for you to get a deeper knowledge in a specific field so you know where to focus your education, training and eventually professional path.
A next step could be an internship or technical development program which many companies offer. I've provided a link below for information specific to AT&T's internship and technical development programs that should give you an idea of what's out there for you as you progress in your degree program.

Good luck and please let me know if you have additional questions.

Hi Michael,
It's great to hear that you are interested in developing your technical skills so early in your college career!
A great starting point is to think about what your main interests are in CIS - once you know what you are most passionate about, it makes it easier to decide what skills to focus on. When I was trying to decide what technical skills to focus on while in college, I would often go to LinkedIn to find professionals in the position I would someday want and see what technical skills, certifications, and educational background they had. It offers a great insight into what employers value and what technical skills to focus on and allows you to figure out what skills you need for the job that you want. You can also look at recent graduates from your same major to see what skills they developed while in college and any insight they might have into the skills you need - you can often find them through LinkedIn or your school's alumni network.
For technical trainings, a great website for improving your technical skills is Cybrary.com - it offers training opportunities for technical skills in cybersecurity and IT.
Best of luck!

You could be an ethical hacker and try to break into websites for a living (these are the red teams). You could be a Cybersecurity professional helping development teams write secure code. OWASP is a great organization to look at for career opportunities. https://www.malwarebytes.com/cybersecurity/ is a great resource for learning more as is https://www.checkmarx.com/technology/application-security-testing/.
