What are some ways for me to find more volunteer ops?

I am a freshman at Cal Poly Pomona majoring in Computer Information Systems. I would like to develop my technical skills but I am not quite sure where to start. Any advice would be helpful, thank you. #volunteer #internship

Hi Michael,

It looks like Cal Poly Pomona has a career center, and they've got an online platform you can use specifically for job or internship searches - you could also meet with a career coach or counselor there to discuss local opportunities to develop your skills (check out https://www.cpp.edu/career/index.shtml).

If you'd like to do some digging on your own first, I recommend thinking about the kinds of experience you'd like to get. Do you want to work on a team, or do some independent freelance work? Is there a student organization on your campus devoted to Computer Information Systems or something similar? Would you like to get some experience helping people and getting more practice with soft skills, which are becoming increasingly more valuable to potential employers? Local organizations or school systems may be looking for volunteers to help with anything ranging from computer literacy in the community to encouraging elementary-age students to pursue IT as they get older. Basically, you've got A LOT of options for volunteer experience - it just depends on the skills you want to build!

Colleges typically hold career and internship fairs in the spring, so be sure to keep an eye out for that event - you never know what opportunity might be there waiting for a proactive student like you!

Hannah recommends the following next steps:

Attend a local Career and Internship Fair

Alecia’s Answer

Putting steps below, but here is an example from a website I really like, Volunteer Match. For example, I'm in ATL area and put in "computer science" and this opportunity came up: https://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp3189952.jsp

Alecia recommends the following next steps:

Check out https://www.volunteermatch.org
Create your LinkedIn profile (if you haven't already)
Follow companies you are interested in on LinkedIn
Make connections with friends and parent's friends - also search for people with recruiter title from you targeted companies
Reach out to connections and companies to inquire about volunteer opportunities and check their LinkedIn job listings too.

Melisa’s Answer

Hello Michael,

What a great question! I’m passionate about helping people find innovative ways to volunteer, including volunteering on platforms like CareerVillage. In my role as a community engagement leader, I help employees find ways to make an impact in our communities and work to create and promote programs that will encourage social good.

No matter what career interests you, I feel it is important to find time to volunteer, in any way you can, to help make an impact in our world. Volunteer experiences may also lead you to grow your network of people, find mentors and learn more about jobs that may interest you.

Best wishes for success in your education and career goals.

Melisa recommends the following next steps:

Check out the site http://greatnonprofits.org to find an organization near you.
Another site for volunteer opportunities in your area is https://www.volunteermatch.org/
Check out this article on “Using Technology and Innovation for Social Good.” https://www.greenpath.com/technology-and-innovation/
Some of these are older videos, but check out these TED Talks on volunteering. https://www.ted.com/search?q=volunteering
Seek out a mentor or individual in a career that you are passionate about and learn more about their job, what they like, dislike about it. Consider setting up time for an informational interview or job shadow session or volunteer alongside a mentor.

Mari’s Answer

Hi Michael,

You have already been given some fantastic advice. But I'll add, running season is coming up. Keep your eyes open for any opportunities and request a position on the IT team. Another great place to pick up some experience is at a church.

Hope this helps.
