What was most challenging about becoming A Pharmacy Technician?

HI my name is Skyla, I"m going to school to be a Pharmacy Technician and I've heard a lot of ups and downs being in that field such as remembering the Medicines names as well as dose age but I've also heard that it is very rewarding when it comes to knowledge about math and knowing some medical termonology as well as being in the medical field so what would you say are the ups and downs to being a Pharmacy Technician? #pharmacy #medicine #pharmacist

Its been over 7 years since I was a CPhT so things may have changed since then, but I can comment based on my experience. I would say that it is important to be good in math especially when working with IV admixtures . The more you work with medications the better you will become with recognizing their name and use. As with any job you just need to be intentional to learn as you encounter new things with your job. Also when I was a pharmacy technician the national certification examination was perceived as being very challenging but using an exam prep book is more than enough to prepare you adequately. In my opinion working in the hospital was more challenging than retail.

Candace’s Answer

For most prospective pharmacy technician the most challenging aspect would be the calculations involved in determining the dose. There are some si.ple ones, however some are more involved and require more diligence in checking to be sure they are correct. Techs are required to check their work and even though the pharmacist has the final check it is imperative the calculations are correct.
Another challenging area is working within a busy environment and managing your workload. You will be much better off if you can create a routine for work, study ,and personal time.
Be sure when you are at work , you are working . It is very easy to become distracted and get behind in your duties.
I hope this helps
I have been an instructor for technicians for many years as well as oversee a large diverse staff of pharmacists and techs.
Stay focused and work hard.
You will be successful!
Good luck!
