Right now every automotive company is investing in transitioning towards an electric based powertrain. I focused too much on traditional mechanical engineering and got lost in the crowd. Do something related to electronics or computers, batteries etc and you will see success in the automotive industry!
This can't be overstated. Clean sheet powertrains are now moving to all-electric.

I would advice to use your free time to learn any popular coding language such as python because it opens the opportunity to work in a lot of companies. Unfortunately, Mechanical Engineering does not require you to take several coding classes therefore it will be something that you would have to do on your own. Also, try to manage your time in every class so that you can learn as much as possible and prevent stress.
