Hi Zara,
My name is Gaby and this is really great that as a highschool student you are looking for opportunities. I would do the following to find an internship in the industry:
- Go to your career counselor and ask them if they have any recommendations
-If they don't, ask if there are any non-profit organizations that they know of that you can get help from
Non-profits that are dedicated for empowering highschool students will be your BEST resource to get plugged in to many opportunities. They usually have a vast network of professionals that are willing to help out students. These two resources will be able to help you land an internship in finance!
Best of Luck!

I have a background in finance and there are a few things you could do. Volunteer to be the treasurer for an organization at school or perhaps you could help out with a local charity doing some bookkeeping. Also check for summer hire jobs at your local CITY HALL, FIRE DEPT or even see if organizations like UNITED WAY need volunteers for their programs since they will train you to help with things like being a tax preparer. Also, ask a local person in your community if you could talk to them about their career and what they do on a daily basis.
Check out volunteer options in your community
See if someone is willing to mentor you
Take on a treasurer position at school or in the community

When I was in high school, I registered with large temp agencies (such as Kelly Services, etc), and looked for very basic summer jobs, such as data entry, etc, This allowed me to get exposure into a corporate environment, and at times it was only a week or two, but it was helpful in getting exposure. The other thing you can do is volunteer in the community, as stated above. And if you have any friends/family that will allow you to "shadow" them for a day at their job, this could be a great way to get exposure into a "day in the life of" type of experience.

Hi Zara,
It's wonderful that you are taking the initiative to get a head start for yourself! While it might be difficult to secure a finance internship as a high school student, be sure to leverage your current network while trying to expand your network to help you into the industry!
A great first step for you is to consider your current network of friends and family and the friends and family of your network if they could help you into the industry. Best of luck!

A good option to get an internship as a high school is with non-profits. Most have very tight budgets (can’t afford to hire a lot of people) and want to help their community (meaning they would likely be open to helping a student with an internship). Some may have an internship program but many will not. Even with no formal internship program, most would likely welcome extra help for the summer if you can show them how an internship would provide value to them.
Find a non-profit you are interested in and ask to meet with the finance person. Ask them which of the day to day activities take the most of their time and offer to help for the summer with the day to day work (this helps them). Highlight how this will free some of their time. Because you are volunteering and this won’t affect their budget, also ask to sit in on meetings dealing with planning, vendors, or any other bigger picture activities. This will give you experience in learning other areas of the business.
One last suggestion - once you do get an internship and are working. Before you leave each day (if you have time) ask if there is anything else they need help with today. They will say no most of the time but the time they say yes you might get experience in another aspect of their business.
Make a list of non-profits you are interested in.
Contact in order of preference
Have a plan for the hours you can volunteer and the duration (is it summer only or can it continue in the school year).

This is a great question and a tough one. It is really difficult to find finance internships in high school. I suggest first asking around in your family and your friends and seeing if there is someone that you know that works in finance and can help you find an internship where they work.

Hi Zara - Great question. As a college student, I suggest networking with trusted family and friends to find summer opportunities. Maybe your parents have friends who work in marketing or for local businesses. Also, consider taking hourly jobs at businesses that have a marketing department. While you may not be able to do marketing full time, you can always talk to the marketing manager and ask them if they need help with anything. Also, search trusted online resources and create a LinkedIn profile so you can begin networking with industry professionals now and in the future who may be able to assist you.
