Britni’s Answer

Hi! I'm a back office medical assistant and I participate in hands-on patient care! Everything from taking vitals, doing medical intakes, filling out lab requisitions, assisting with procedures. I am cross-trained to work front office as well, where I answer phone calls and schedule patients. I also check eligibility with insurances.

Suzanne’s Answer

HI Karen,

I am a registered nurse but have worked with many medical administrative assistants. A really expert CMAA can multitask, can work well with most everyone, and essentially, care about the work they are doing.

A good CMAA can receive a patient phone call and know when to hand that call over to a physician or nurse. A really good CMAA can manage a clinic that sees many hundreds of patients a day. CMAAs must have solid technological skills and understand the complexity of scheduling, insurance, billing, and office procedures.

As the RN, I recall the best CMAAs as being the ones who would ensure that any sick patient was seen first and that a sick-patient phone call was immediately triaged by the RN.
