I am an English major with a concentration on Creative Writing and a minor in Screenwriting. My dream job is to be a screenwriter. I had a professor in college who was determined to remind us that there are PLENTY of opportunities for English majors. Do not get discouraged thinking that the only thing you can do is become a teacher. I have no desire to be a teacher either! There is always something for English majors because we have a unique skill set. I have copied below a giant list of careers that English majors have the qualifications and skills for.

Hi Elizabeth! I was not an English major, so I cannot provide an answer through firsthand experience. I can however tell you that you can apply an English major to any number of careers (all of which are outside of teaching). I have friends in sales, journalism, consulting and colleagues in the investigations industry, all of whom were English majors. It is really important to choose a major that you are really interested in. That way, you can get the most out of it. If English is what you are passionate about, go for it! The skills you will learn (and probably already have learned) in reading comprehension and writing will be very useful in any career.

Talk to your English teacher to see if he/she knows of anyone who might be working in your area who graduated with a degree in English and see if you can visit them to see what they are doing.
Go for it! You could have a very interesting future!
Send thank you notes to those who help you. Please keep me posted. I would like to follow your progress!
