Gabrielle, great question!
I worked for 5 years in community impact work and I started with a for-profit company. Many large companies employ staff to act a community engagement professionals. These professionals help guide company or company foundation funds toward community partners. I found that working for a company with money to give was a particularly empowering role to play in my community. In this way, you can help connect worthy local causes with company resources which help them meet their mission.
Most medium to large companies host internships each year. In my case, we hired several student interns to learn about community impact, foundation funding operations, and research into the needs of our community partners. If you have a hard time finding listings for the kind of internship you like, you might seek part-time or summer employment at medium to large companies and then ask if they have a volunteering program -- that's actually what I'm doing right now during my day at work! By getting engaged at work, you will encounter people with a job you might like to fill someday.

That would be a good start, also if you are looking for internships to get involved in the community try the papers and the chamber of commerce. Getting your brand out there is most important so anything you do to get people in the community to know your name the better.
