C. Jonathan’s Answer

Working as a CNA in a hospital can very by facility and department, however one thing is certain, expect to be the primary direct patient care giver, working up close and personal with a variety of patients during each shift. CNA assignments will often include several patient rooms in which the CNA works under a licensed Nurse to provide basic nursing care. Expect to obtain vital signs, height and weight measurements, intake and output measurements, lifting and positioning patients, helping ambulate patients, bathing patients, assisting patients with urination and bowel movements, cleaning and changing patients, feeding patients, monitoring for changes in patients condition, assisting in emergency situations, and performing postmortem care. CNA's will often work together with other CNA's as well as with other members of the healthcare team to best meet the needs of particular patients. CNA's need a good understanding of basic infection control to prevent the spread of infection to themselves, other patients and anyone else they would come in contact with. It is also vital that CNA's can communicate well with patients, patients families and of course with colleagues as well. Working as a Certified Nursing Assistant is the bedrock of nursing and can be a very rewarding career. A valid consideration for this role is that it is hard work, on your feet for most of the shift, lifting and moving patients can be tiring and takes a toll on the body and mind. It takes a good degree empathy, courtesy, adaptability, and perseverance to perform this job well as the atmosphere is definitely challenging at times.

Estelle’s Answer

The work environment for a nurse depends on what kind of nursing is being done. If you really want intense work, the surgical ICU is the place for you. If you want to have a more sweet and caring environment, a pediatric outpatient clinic is a great option. I think the best step is to familiars familiarize yourself with the different practices of medicine and decide which one fits you best.
