Is it beneficial to sub-specialize in pediatrics?
I want to be a pediatrician, but when I spoke to a family friend who graduated from medical school I was informed to sub-specialize rather than be a general pediatrician. I have considered this pathway, but I am fearful that it will be more difficult to find a job if I go that route. #doctor #medicine #nurse #pediatrics #pediatrician #health-care

Hi Diana:
My son is currently in a Pediatric sub-specialty program. Dr. Rykwalder's comments are right on point. However, while in medical school he had chosen a sub-specialty area that he thought he wanted to go in. But, when the pandemic hit in 2020, he changed his mind and went down a different path after seeing what COVID patients were suffering from. He's now on the road to finishing his program soon and is extremely happy with his work. Best of luck to you on your journey to become a Pediatrician.

Thankfully you have time! I found that in medical school, especially when you get the chance to rotate on your Pediatrics rotation, you can experience first hand what specialists do. So I would say keep the door open, shadow some specialists in the meantime and see if that is what you enjoy. Then in medical school once you are on rotations setup ones in Peds Specialties you consider and see what doors open for you :)
