What are some good volunteering programs for high school students interested in nursing?
I am located in Belton, MO and I'm hoping to volunteer so I can learn about being a nurse!

Hi Josie,
I would suggest contacting some of your local hospitals. Sometimes healthcare facilities will have programs for youth volunteers and that can get you some exposure and experience in the medical field. You could also talk to your guidance counselor at school and they may have some good resources for you.
Hope this helps!

Hello Josie,
I live in NC & the best place I found for H.S. students to about nursing school was through their schools. There are volunteer programs here in Guilford county to match individuals up based on their interest. I recall students shadowing on my unit while I was a CNA at a local hospital here in Greensboro. They were in a health careers program and shadowed different roles on out unit.
Contact your school’s guidance counselor
Research programs offered at your school
Contact local volunteer agencies
Contact local hospitals volunteer coordinators
Contact local skilled nursing facilities volunteer coordinators

In the area where I'm from there is a program that BOCES runs that lets high school students get to shadow health care professionals:

I would talk with your high school guidance counselor to see if there are options in your area that might be like the New Visions Program. Another option would be to become a volunteer at a hospital. I did that when I was in college and they sent me to the Nursing Education Department and to the Emergency Department

Carly and Claudia have great answers, but in addition I would add the Explorer Program. The Explorer Program is an offshoot of the Boy Scouts of America, designed to educate youths in a variety of vocational fields. I began my career in this program, serving as both a Law Enforcement and Fire Department Explorer. This will probably not prepare you for a career in nursing as well as a volunteer program in a hospital, but if you can not find such a program, this is a good alternative. Particularly an EMS or Fire Department Explorer Program will introduce you to the world of patient care, give you a background in pre-hospital emergency care, and likely provide you with certifications in CPR, First Aid, or even an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) - all of which would be good resume builders as you apply for colleges and scholarships to pursue nursing.
