Jane’s Answer

I have been a nurse for many years. When I first started my career my joy came from knowing that I was caring for patients who needed my knowledge and skills, Now that I've been practicing for quite a while I know on a daily basis that I am supporting a patient and family through very difficult experiences. I am thankful for my years of experience, my education, developing my expertise, my job. Nursing can be demanding physically, emotionally, spiritually. It is a challenge to you and your loved ones. But I wouldn't change my choice of profession for the world. I love being a nurse!

Jane recommends the following next steps:

If you're considering a job in nursing be aware that ther are so many avenues you can take. Even if you start out in one segment of nursing and find that it might not be for you continue your search.

Christine’s Answer

Hello Maria,

Great question!!! First, there are many parts of nursing I like.

I love taking care of patients and building relationships with them. Nurses, particularly hospital floor nurses, see patients at their worst and preserving their dignity while providing compassionate care builds a trusting relationship. I like emergency situations. I do well under pressure and go into hyper-focus mode; adrenaline so to speak.

Kerrie’s Answer

For me, I love being a nurse to be able to help patients and other nurses. I have always wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl, so becoming one was a dream come true! I have worked in Med Surg, Pediatrics, and in the OR. Perioperative is my first love, so being able to really comfort patients and being their advocate when they cannot advocate for themselves (when they are under anesthesia) is something I feel strongly about. I always try to treat patients like they were my family members and so I have always connected well with patients and their families. I love that connection, especially when you may be the only link the family has to their loved one in surgery.
I also became an Educator and a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Perioperative setting. So I love learning new things and sharing with others. I always try to seek out new learning experiences, try to learn from others, and share my knowledge when I can. I think this is the best thing about how nurses can support each other. Nursing can be a thankless job sometimes, but if we support each other and help each other, then we have this great bond of love, friendship, and teamwork that transcends into practice!
